Phils win, but lose Rollins...Yanks win subway opener - WJBD Online

UNDATED (AP) - Cole Hamels pitched seven impressive innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Boston Red Sox 5-1 on the first night of interleague play. Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth homered as the NL East-leading Phillies are back to a season-high 11 games over .500 at 26-and-15.

It may have been a costly victory for the Phils. Jimmy Rollins left the game in the sixth with a right calf strain, and he's day to day. The three-time All-Star shortstop missed 29 games with an injured right calf before returning to the lineup Monday.

Hamels outdueled John Lackey for his fifth win of the season in a matchup of World Series heroes. The lanky left-hander allowed one run and three hits, striking out eight.

In other Interleague play:

  • Javier Vazquez pitched one-hit ball for six innings before leaving with an injury and the Yankees took advantage of more inept Mets' play to win the opener of the Subway Series 2-1. Vazquez left after he was hit on the finger laying down a sacrifice bunt in the Yanks' two-run seventh.

  • Jason Kubel and the Minnesota Twins battered a frustrated Dave Bush for seven first-inning runs and beat the sputtering Milwaukee Brewers 15-3. Kubel drove in four runs and drew one of eight walks handed out by the Brewers.

  • Houston ended Tampa Bay's six-game winning streak, 2-1. Hunter Pence broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Brett Myers didn't allow an earned run over seven innings.

  • St. Louis right-hander Brad Penny hit a grand slam in the third inning, but hurt his back and had to be relieved by the Cardinals' bullpen after three innings in a 9-5 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

  • In a game featuring eight home runs, Arizona beat Toronto 8-6 despite three solo homers by Edwin Encarnacion. After dropping seven in a row, Arizona has won five of seven games and scored 29 runs in the last three victories.

  • The L.A. Dodgers topped Detroit 4-1. Chad Billingsley won his third straight start with seven solid innings. He combined with two relievers on a four-hitter.

  • In the Bay Bridge Series, Oakland trimmed San Francisco 6-1. The Athletics routed Barry Zito with six runs on nine hits in dropping the Giants starter to 6-and-2.

  • Kansas City rocked Colorado 9-2. Jose Guillen homered twice and drove in three.

  • Laynce Nix had three hits, including a tiebreaking double in the sixth inning, leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 7-4 win over slumping Cleveland. The Indians have lost five straight.

  • The Chicago White Sox blanked Florida 8-0. Mark Buehrle and Sergio Santos combined on a three-hitter.

  • Baltimore won the opener in the Battle of the Beltways by beating Washington 5-3. David Hernandez ended a run of 16 straight starts without a victory. Adam Jones hit a two-run home run.

  • Nelson Cruz drove in the tiebreaking run for the Texas Rangers in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. That's the Rangers' fifth straight win.

  • In a wild one at Safeco Field, Seattle outslugged San Diego 15-8. Mike Sweeney homered twice, went four-for-five and drove in six runs. The teams combined for 23 runs and 30 hits.

In the lone National League game:

  • Rookie Jason Heyward homered and drove in three runs to support Tim Hudson's eight dominating innings and the Atlanta Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-0 for their fourth consecutive victory. Hudson is 5-and-1.

Oswalt wants out of Houston

HOUSTON (AP) - Getting no run support and pitching for a team mired in last place, Astros ace Roy Oswalt (OHZ'-wahlt) wants out of Houston.

General manager Ed Wade says Oswalt's agent, Bob Garber, contacted owner Drayton McLane earlier this week to make the request. When asked if it was a request or a demand, Wade said that distinction didn't matter.

The 32-year-old Oswalt recently said he would be willing to waive his no-trade clause.

Oswalt has made nine straight quality starts to open the season but is 2-6 with a 2.66 ERA. He has gotten the lowest run support in the league. Even with their victory Friday night, the Astros have the worst record in the NL at 15-and-27.
