'Robin Hood' makes merry on classic DVDs - Hattiesburg American

Posted: 13 May 2010 06:30 PM PDT

When Russell Crowe picks up the quiver in Robin Hood, out Friday, he'll be traveling Sherwood Forest in footsteps that go back to 1922's silent Robin Hood, starring Douglas Fairbanks, and include everything from sitcoms to musicals to TV series.

"Robin is one of those total heroes. The story has always fascinated people," says film historian and TCM host Robert Osborne.

Though the 2010 version has dispensed with the customary tricorner hat and tights, fans can sample the Robin of olde in a quartet of films hitting stores Tuesday and available on DVD for the first time.

The Bandit of Sherwood Forest (1946); Prince of Thieves (1948); Rogues of Sherwood Forest (1950) and Sword of Sherwood Forest (1960) all are available from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment ($15 each).

Any Robin Hood film is overshadowed by 1938's The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn. Adventures was a crowd-pleaser and a critical favorite. It led the field that year with four Academy Award nominations, winning three. Still, these other entries have their place in the Hood.

The appeal is timeless, Osborne says, because "it's basically a costumed Western: You know who the good guys are and the bad guys are and are waiting to see how it turns out."

He notes that Bandit was an ambitious undertaking for Columbia Pictures. Cornel Wilde plays Robin Hood's son, Robert. Wilde was a hot young star coming off an Oscar nomination for A Song to Remember.

Prince stars Jon Hall as Robin, an action star known for 1944's Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves. Rogues stars John Derek as Robin Hood's son and features the last performance of Alan Hale, who played Little John in this and two other Robin Hood movies.

Sword stars Richard Greene, who played Robin Hood on TV from 1955 to 1960. Look for Oliver Reed and Desmond Llewelyn, who later would play Q in the James Bond movies.

"Robin Hood is one of literature's original superheroes," says Marc Rashba, Sony Home Entertainment's vice president of worldwide marketing. He says the release of Russell Crowe's Robin Hood "created an opportune moment for us to find four classic gems that have been never released before."

NBC Officially Ends 'Heroes' TV Series - Baller Status

Posted: 15 May 2010 12:55 AM PDT

Heroes TV showAfter four seasons, NBC has officially canceled their once uber-popular series "Heroes" following speculation over its future.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network had been contemplating whether to bring the series back limited amount of episodes to wrap up the story line.

Hopes were lost, however, with the announcement Friday (May 14).

Sources told THR that the door is still open to possibly conclude the show with a special or movie.

"Heroes" debuted in 2006 to critical acclaim, quickly becoming one of the biggest series on television. It even spawned its own a spin-off (which was ultimately scrapped), online components, books and merchandising.
However, after its first season, its writers struggled to keep the show's twisting narrative on track. For example, characters were killed off and resurrected with regularity. Narrative threads were started, then abandoned. Sometimes things were just a bit all over the place.

Some blamed it on creator/exec producer Tim Kring's busy schedule. Others say "Heroes" just didn't live up to level of season one.

Many of our staff were fans of the show, and as viewers we are sad to see it go. Hopefully something can be done to, at least, give the series the ending it deserves.

NBC picked up several new shows in its place, including superhero drama "The Cape," and "The Event.

NBC Universal cancels the Tim Kring superhero series ... - Thaindian.com

LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — After four seasons, NBC Universal on Friday decided to cancel the once popular television series "Heroes." Television insiders had long speculated that "Heroes" would not get a renewal due to poor ratings during the fourth season. Rumors of a half-season pickup for a limited number of episodes have turned out not to be true.

The television science fiction drama "Heroes" was created by Executive Producer Tim Kring and premiered in 2006. The series followed a group of ordinary humans who received extra-ordinary abilities. It starred Hayden Panettiere as "The Cheerleader" and Zachary Quinto as the sinister "Sylar."

The first season of "Heroes" was considered a ratings success for NBC. It provided great counter-programming against popular Fox series "24″ and "Prison Break" and later on "House."

Throughout its television lifespan, "Heroes" earned numerous awards and nominations. In 2007, "Heroes" won the People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama.

Originally presented as having the storytelling similar to a comic book, "Heroes" spawned several award winning webisode spinoffs and graphic novels.

The fourth season of "Heroes" concluded in February.
