Jeremy Renner has made up for lost time with a series of hot film roles - Boston Herald

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 10:57 PM PDT

FRESNO, Calif. — There was no way they could know it at the time, but a lot of women in California's Central Valley got makeup tips in the early '90s from a future Oscar nominee: Jeremy Renner.

"One of the many jobs I had was working at the Gottschalks in Modesto as a makeup artist," he says. "They wanted to pay me a lot of money to hang out with hot girls to do makeup shows at stores from Modesto to Los Angeles. It was such an amazing job."

Renner, a Modesto native and the best actor Oscar nominee for last year's "The Hurt Locker," continues to find amazing jobs playing anti-heroes with a lot of charm.

He can next be seen playing James Coughlin in the Ben Affleck crime drama "The Town," which opens Friday. He's also starting work on "Mission: Impossible IV" and will portray the ace archer Hawkeye in the Marvel Comics movie "The Avengers."

"The Town" is the story of a group of friends from a Boston community that has produced more bank and armored car robbers than anywhere else in the country. Renner's character will do anything to protect his friends and fellow thieves.

Affleck, who directed the movie, thought of Renner for the role. He needed an actor to play a loose cannon — but not do it as a cliche. The character has to play tough and remain sympathetic. Renner delivered those traits.

It helped that Renner knows a lot about being loyal. Although his family moved around a lot when he was young, Renner had a few friends that were as close as brothers.

"My friends and family are the most important thing in my life. That belief system of loyalty is an amazing thing and lovely to have. It makes you feel like you belong on the planet," he says.

Growing up, Renner worked a variety of odd jobs — delivering papers, fixing computers, bagging groceries. It wasn't until he had graduated from high school and attended Modesto Junior College that he found acting.

"It ended up being an amazing thing for me and I've never looked back," Renner says. "The initial attraction was not what the attraction is now because I didn't understand what acting was or what it meant to me. It initially was a form of therapy, of being able to hide in these characters and have all these feelings.

"When I was growing up I didn't have the maturity to express my feelings. I got to fully explore, in a safe way hiding in a character, all those feelings."

Renner used those skills to land small roles in TV and film, starting with the 1995 release "Senior Trip." He's also appeared in "28 Weeks Later" and "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford."

Before filming started on "The Town," Renner saw his character James as a flashy guy who makes things — maybe good, maybe bad — happen. Then Renner looked deeper.

"It was the loyalty aspect of the character that I really, really thought was intriguing and dimensional to the character so he's not just a heavy but that there's a reason for what he's doing," Renner says.

Hurting for Heroes: Week 2 Fantasy Football Injury Replacements - Bleacherreport.com

PHILADELPHIA - SEPTEMBER 02: Kevin Kolb #4 of the Philadelphia Eagles stands on the sidelines during a preseason game against the New York Jets at Lincoln Financial Field on September 2, 2010 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (Photo by Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images)Jeff Zelevansky/Getty Images

If you watched the Eagles/Packers game this week, you learned two things:

1.     Fox loves commercials.  In fact, I thought I was watching an advertising montage that was occasionally interrupted by a football game (although that Ray Lewis commercial is a treasure).

2.    Big men running around and colliding into each other means someone is going to get hurt.
Clay Matthews, a dead-to-rights doppelganger to Conan the Barbarian and Fabio's love child, buried Kevin Kolb's head into the turf.  Ryan Grant's ankle went pretzel under the weight of a couple Eagles defenders.  In the Lions game, the Bears' Richard Seymour mashed Matthew Stafford's throwing shoulder into the grass.

All three players fell under the "this-guy-has-potential-to-be-a-sleeper" category, so chances are they served as a second-tier player in your lineup.  However, I know there are a few fantasy owners out there who drafted heavy on running backs and wide receivers and waited until the middle rounds to draft Kolb.  Here's a breakdown of Band-Aid backups that can salvage your hurting starters.

Replacing Kevin Kolb and Matthew Stafford

Let's face it.  Injury or not, Kolb had a terrible game.  He left the game in the second quarter and returned to play two series.  Michael Vick played a tremendous game in Kolb's absence, firing darts to his receivers and rushing for over 100 yards.  Kolb wasn't hurt badly enough to take off the pads and return in street clothes, but you have to wonder if Vick's resurgence will further dent Kolb's already-chinked armor.  In a fickle city like Philadelphia, this could mean doom.

Stafford, like Kolb, was putting together a raggedy open act to the 2010 before Julius Pepper turned his throwing shoulder into applesauce.  He's visiting the renowned Dr. James Andrews this week to get a second opinion on his separated shoulder.  Expect him to be out at least three weeks.   Who will be the hero for you in this situation?

Enter Matt Hasselbeck, Derek Anderson, and Michael Vick.

According to Rotowire.com, Hasselbeck was the second to last quarterback selected in drafts this year.  The last quarterback selected?  That's right…Michael Vick.
