Little Mountain to receive a "Heroes Welcome" - MiLB.com Posted: 01 Sep 2010 03:25 AM PDT Fresh off an appearance at the Little League World Series, Little Mountain Baseball now heads to Scotiabank Field Our boys are back from Williamsport, PA and the Little League World Series (Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium - Vancouver, BC) - What a ride it must have been. For a handful of local baseball players from Little Mountain, the journey from regular season games just steps away from Nat Bailey Stadium all the way to the Little League World Series was likely both exhausting and unforgettable. Imagine going to just another local kid playing summer baseball to competing for a Championship on a global stage with your games broadcast on TV in more than 45 countries. This is what those associated with Little Mountain's National Championship 12-year old team will write on their 'What I did this summer' report when they head back to school in the coming days. But before the kids and coaching staff hang 'em up for another summer, the Vancouver Canadians have invited Canada's entry in the Little League World Series out to Scotiabank Field on Friday, September 3rd for one final 'tip of the cap' from the guys next door. The Canadians will honour Little Mountain Baseball for their trip to the Little League World Series with a pre-game ceremony as well as a silent auction held in the concourse at Nat Bailey Stadium, with all proceeds from the latter going directly to Little Mountain Baseball in hopes of helping subsidize some of the parental travel expenses for the tournament. Some of the players from this team and the 1953 Little Mountain Team (the last Little Mountain Team to make it to the Little World Series), will be throwing out the ceremonial 'First Pitch. The Silent Auction will begin when the gates open on Friday and will end at the end of the 7th inning. Come out and congratulate the 2010 Little Mountain entry at the Little League World Series on Friday, September 3rd out at Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium! Jackson, Pierzynski heroes for a day - ESPN.com Posted: 31 Aug 2010 08:37 PM PDT CLEVELAND -- Manny Ramirez is going to have a hard time supplanting Edwin Jackson as the White Sox's best second-half acquisition. And he will have an equally hard time matching the Tuesday heroics of A.J. Pierzynski. He did make his presence felt, though, even in a game where he didn't play. Ramirez was on deck to hit for Brent Lillibridge when Pierzynski hit a go-ahead three-run home run off Frank Hermann that was the difference in a 4-3 victory over the Indians. With his work essentially done for the night, Ramirez was called back and Lillibridge was allowed to hit for himself. "Yeah, I told him that I finally got some protection," Pierzynski said. "I told him he got a standing ovation just for going out on-deck which is awesome." Yes, part of the reason Ramirez was claimed from the Dodgers was that he is known to change games by his mere presence. But manager Ozzie Guillen wasn't ready to say that was the reason Pierzynski was able to hit his first home run since July 9. "It's unpredictable, but when you see Manny's presence, when [somebody] is going to hit in front of Manny, he's going to look at better pitches," Guillen said. "You have to be careful with the guy in front of you because you got to throw strikes to that guy [because] they don't want to face him." Jackson and Pierzynski would have an interesting time arguing who was most valuable to the White Sox on Tuesday. Needing not only a solid outing to keep the White Sox in the game, but a long one to help preserve a worn down bullpen, Jackson handled it all. If they needed him to bake a cake and drive the team bus, he probably could have aced those chores as well. [+] Enlarge In essence, Pierzynski saved the bullpen too since an extra-inning game would have required the battered relief corps to take over indefinitely. The consensus, though, was that Jackson's game-long effort was far more vital than what Pierzynski did in one at-bat. AP Photo/Mark DuncanManny Ramirez didn't get past the on-deck circle on Tuesday. Jackson did everything but finish off the complete game the White Sox so desperately wanted him to get. He went 8 2/3 innings, throwing 129 pitches in the process. Nearly out of gas, he gave up two runs in the bottom of the ninth, before Bobby Jenks came on to get the final out. In five starts since joining the White Sox, Jackson is 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA. He also recorded 11 strikeouts becoming the first White Sox pitcher to record three consecutive double-digit strikeout performances since Floyd Bannister in 1985. "It's like a new season pretty much," said Jackson, who was 6-10 with a 5.16 ERA with the Diamondbacks. "You come over here fresh with a fresh start, a fresh team and you come over and feed off the energy that's going through the clubhouse. Just continue to go out and gel with the team.'' But aren't pitchers who go from the National League to the American League supposed to have a hard time? "I thought the same thing – the National League is supposed to be easier than the American League – but they're both hard," Jackson said. "You just have to go out and attack the zone, put pressure on the hitters.'' Not to be forgotten in the hero department was centerfielder Alex Rios. When the Indians' Jason Donald smoked a two-run single to center field in the bottom of the ninth inning, Rios was able to move to his right and keep the ball in front of him off a high hop. Instead of Donald standing on third as the tying run if the ball got past Rios, he was on first base. Jenks gave up a single to Matt LaPorta before getting Michael Brantley on a comebacker to end it. "We called the bullpen and said, 'Who's ready and who's not? Who's available?" Guillen said. "Bobby said he's ready to go, Bobby, (Scott Linebrink) and (Sergio) Santos. That's the ones we were going to use at that particular time and they were ready to go and I went with my best bet, my closer. As a manager you hear your players saying that, knowing they're very beat up, they do so many things, you feel what type of players you have playing for you and that's nice to hear." By the numbers 3: Players the White Sox are expected to recall Wednesday the first day rosters can be expanded. Reliever Gregory Infante, who combined to go 3-4 with a 3.45 ERA, will make the jump from Double-A. Outfielder Alejandro De Aza also will be called up as will catcher Tyler Flowers. Dayan Viciedo and Carlos Torres, who was sent down Tuesday when Ramirez was put on the roster, will be recalled when their minor-league season ends. Quote "I understand that Ozzie is the manager and I screwed around one day saying I was going to play for him in a joking manner. I understand that I have to respect the manager. I understand that Ozzie jokes around but when it's time to play it's time to play. You've got to give 100 percent." – Manny Ramirez, on playing for his new outspoken manager. Look ahead White Sox right-hander Freddy Garcia (11-5, 4.89 ERA) will take the mound Wednesday at Cleveland as both teams have a short turnaround for the day game. Garcia took the White Sox's only victory in the three-game series at home over the weekend against the Yankees. Garcia's rising innings total has been a concern and seems to be evident in his 2-2 record and 6.43 ERA over his last seven starts. He is 5-3 with a 3.09 ERA in his career at Progressive Field. Garcia will be opposed by Indians right-hander Josh Tomlin (2-3, 4.08), who will be making his seventh start of the season. Tomlin had a 1.46 ERA after two starts in July, but had a 5.48 ERA in four August starts. He won his major-league debut July 27 and didn't win again until his last start, exactly one month later. He has never faced the White Sox.
