ESPN Classic announces British Boxing Heroes - BoxingNews24.com Posted: 15 Jun 2010 01:30 AM PDT 15th June 2010: With stars such as David Haye and Amir Khan, Britain continues to boast some of the world's best boxing talent, and ESPN Classic has announced the launch of a new series which celebrates Britain's rich boxing heritage. British Boxing Heroes looks back on some of the fighters that represented Britain gloriously throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s. Presented by boxing expert Steve Bunce, the ten-part series is a combination of little-seen match-ups, classic fights and career-defining moments. The revealing programmes include some of Britain's most famous boxers showcasing their raw talent in bouts before they had hit the big time, as well as contests featuring fighters in their prime. The half-hour long episodes include: "Before They Were Famous", featuring Joe Calzaghe in only his second professional fight, Ken Buchanan's British Lightweight title clash against Brian Hudson and Naseem Hamed's fifth pro fight; "Frank Bruno: The Early Years", with some of Bruno's earliest encounters, including his first professional contest, up against Lupe Guerra and his first title fight (for the European Heavyweight title) against Anders Eklund; and Henry Cooper v Joe Bugner in 1971 – possibly the most notorious British fight in boxing history, which deeply divided the boxing community and the public. Commenting on the programme, Steve Bunce said: "Finally a boxing show with a bit of everything! It's the series with big names in their primes, some great fighters when they were unknown and some truly unforgettable nights – it's got the lot. Enjoy it." The series begins on Monday 14th June on ESPN Classic on Sky Channel 429 and Virgin Media Channel 533. See below for a full schedule. Soldier's concert to help heroes (From Gazette Series) - This is South Cotswolds Posted: 15 Jun 2010 01:59 AM PDT Soldier's concert to help heroes 10:53am Monday 14th June 2010 Print Email Share Comments(0) A FORMER soldier from Rockhampton is looking to gain people's support this weekend to raise money for Help For Heroes. Kevin Hackett, 52, a Falklands and Gulf War veteran, is this Saturday, June 19 performing with his band Roxy Magic at the Armstrong Hall in Thornbury. Mr Hackett served in the Royal Logistics Corps for almost 23 years after joining up in 1981. He said: "I was travelling round with different bands trying to be the next big thing. "People kept comparing me with Brian Ferry so I left music completely and decided to do something completely different and joined up. "I only joined for three years and served for nearly 23." During his time in the armed forces Mr Hackett served in the Falklands and the Gulf War and despite leaving the army in 2003 Mr Hackett has said he still lives with the trauma of his experiences. Mr Hackett, who is a war pensioner, said: "My injuries have restricted my lifestyle and it's hard to have a daily routine. I suffer from post traumatic stress disorder, even now I get flashbacks, and I have some physical injuries too. "I'm very conscious the boys coming back from Afghanistan are suffering the same. They are the next generation going through what I'm going through and people need to help them. "Help for Heroes is very close to my heart." Help for Heroes was founded in October 2007 and raises money to help wounded servicemen and women who are returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. Since leaving the army Mr Hackett now lives with his wife Jackie at a small holding in Rockhampton where they run the band Roxy Magic, which is a tribute to Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry. The Help For Heroes concert is being held at the Armstrong Hall, Thornbury this Saturday, June 19 (7.30pm). Tickets are available from Thornbury Town Hall.
