Service honors victims, heroes - Carteret County News Posted: 11 Sep 2010 11:01 PM PDT CHERYL BURKE MOREHEAD CITY — As members of the military and law enforcement saluted, St. Egbert Catholic School students somberly lowered the American flag to half-staff and placed a yellow bow on the flagpole Friday morning to honor the 2,976 victims killed on Sept. 11, 2001, during a series of terrorist attacks that began with the Twin Towers in New York City. "On this day innocent people died and heroes were born," said third grade teacher Toni Justice during the 9/11 ceremony held in front of the school. "This tragedy affected many of us personally and it also affected our nation and the world. Today we honor those who died, and we pray for peace in the world and we pray for our country." The observance featured prayers, a patriotic song and readings from various teachers. The school also invited parents who serve in the military or law enforcement to attend. It was especially meaningful to fifth-grade students Eric Thompson and Marina Parks, whose parents serve in the military. They were invited to place the yellow bow on the flagpole. "It makes me feel sad that all those people died," said Eric, whose father serves in the U.S. Coast Guard. "I wish that it would never happen again." Marina, whose father serves in the U.S. Marine Corps, agreed. "It's a time to remember all the people who died," she said. Morehead City Police Officer Vince Santoro was among law enforcement and military personnel who attended. "It was very touching," Officer Santoro said following the ceremony. "It's really important that we do this as a country and community. It's part of our history, and we just can't forget. "We can't forget that it wasn't just military and law enforcement who lost their lives. But it was guys going to work in their offices. They kissed their families good-bye that day and never came home." The 9/11 observance, also referred to as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, honors the thousands who died in a series of four terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The attacks began at 8:46 a.m., when one of two jet airliners hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center, ultimately leading to the building's collapse. The two planes were among four hijacked that day by al-Qaida terrorists. The third plane went into the Pentagon, with the fourth going down in a rural area of Pennsylvania after passengers and the crew tried to take back control of the plane. All on board the planes died, as well as many in the buildings that were hit. The St. Egbert observance was one of a handful held in the county. St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Morehead City hosted a Civic Appreciation Day on the church grounds Saturday to thank those who serve the citizens of Carteret County and to remember the victims and families of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. County residents gathered Friday night at Crystal Coast Church of Nazarene in Morehead City to pray for the nation. Bogue Sound Elementary School students gathered for a brief patriotic ceremony Friday morning. Volunteer N.C. and the N.C. Association of Feeding America Food Banks partnered together for a statewide food drive Friday through today for National Day of Service and Remembrance 9/11. The National Day of Service and Remembrance, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, is an effort to honor the victims of 9/11 and their families, as well as rekindle the spirit of service. The day also encourages others to join national service programs or volunteer in their communities. Gov. Bev Perdue said Friday that national service programs, AmeriCorps, Senior Corps and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) would participate during the 9/11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. Members were scheduled to participate in food drives, collecting and distributing nonperishable food to their local food banks and pantries. On Saturday, Gov. Perdue and First Gentleman Bob Eaves were scheduled to volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina in Fayetteville. On Monday, Gov. Perdue is set to participate at a food pickup at the Department of Correction in Raleigh. In a press release issued Friday by U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan, D-N.C., the senator said, "On Sept. 11, we reflect and honor the memories of our first responders who gave up their lives to protect others and the civilians who were murdered by terrorists. Ever since that fateful day, the men and women of our military, many of them from North Carolina, have been in pursuit of these terrorists. North Carolina troops are leading the charge to disrupt, dismantle and defeat al Qaeda in Afghanistan. "On this National Day of Service and Remembrance, we must thank and support our first responders who protect our neighborhoods every day, and our troops as they continue to fight the terrorists abroad to protect us at home."
